Xbox & Filmora Video Editor Partnership | Product Design

Project Introduction

The Filmora Video Editor platform is used by millions of creators worldwide. With the rise of YouTube and Twitch as streaming platforms for gamers, Microsoft was looking to enter the streaming market for gamers and approached the Filmora team to partner on creating a video editor tailored for the Xbox One console experience. Our team was given one month to execute a demo that includes features such as the ability to add clips, cut, edit, picture-in-picture, camera shake, speed ramp, etc.

Opportunity Definition

Step one for execution involved collaborating with the Product Manager on outlining requirements in order to get a sense of the scope of the work, gain an understanding of the research findings and begin setting targets. We looked at references from video game and app UI (Splinter Cell, Netflix, etc) to create experiences that felt familiar with gamers, while addressing the complex needs of a video editing product.

Designing the Product Experience

The early stages of this work involved creating user flows through the various paths a user can take through the product. Given the short timeline, we worked in Google Slides which allowed us to quickly iterate on important feature and layout decisions synchronously without getting bogged down by fidelity.

Once the features set, control mapping and user flows were defined, I was able to further flesh out the designs with Adobe Illustrator in closer collaboration with our members for Art Direction/Animation/Sound/Editing. Consistent UI visuals and a streamlined pipeline workflow were crucial in bridging ideas from early definitions to final execution, which can be seen in the examples below.
